Pillars of Health

Whether you’re suffering from Chronic Lyme Disease or any number of autoimmune conditions, the key to your recovery is more than conventional medicine and prescription drugs.

My husband, our three daughters, and I were diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease over 16 years ago. After years of taking antibiotics and many more years of managing symptoms with over-the-counter drugs, we finally realized that Chronic Lyme Disease had led to autoimmune issues that were just as devastating as the original illness. Understanding this important fact helped us to overcome the root cause of our symptoms and to take back our health!

We discovered the answer to full recovery in some core health principles that have been around for centuries. I call these The Pillars of Health.

Implement a "Food Matters" Approach to Eating

The food you eat has a powerful impact on your overall health.  It defines how you feel each day and can greatly influence the amount of inflammation in your body.

It’s no secret that certain foods can cause inflammation, which in turn can cause symptoms of join pain, headaches, stomach problems, fog brain, etc. Changing the food you eat, based on how it affects your body, is the single most powerful lifestyle change to heal your immune system and get back to feeling good again.

Detoxify to Reduce Toxic Load

Never before in human history have we been exposed to so many environmental toxins.  The air we breathe, the chemicals in our food, the prescription and over-the-counter drugs we take, and the products we put on our skin all contribute to our toxic load.

Although the human body has an incredible detoxification system, powered by the kidneys, liver, lymph, lungs, intenstines, and skin, the functioning of these organs can deteriorate over time and become unable to handle the daily intake of toxins.

There is increasing evidence that toxic load can contribute to many diseases, including chronic inflammation, autoimmune deficiency, neurological dysfunction, and cancer.

Do yourself a favor and consider a detoxification program.  It’s one of the best choices you can make to reach optimal health.

Get Eight Hours of Sleep Each Night

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, insufficient sleep has been linked to the development of a number of chronic conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression.  Sleep deprivation has the same effect on your immune system as physical stress or illness.

While sleep requirements vary slightly from person to person, most healthy adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night to function at their best.  The less sleep you get, the more stress will affect you, the more your immune system will weaken, and the greater your chances of becoming ill will be.

There is increasing evidence that toxic load can contribute to many diseases, including chronic inflammation, autoimmune deficiency, neurological dysfunction, and cancer.

Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking adequate amounts of quality water is a key necessity for optimal health. Your body is comprised of 65 percent water, which is needed for every bodily function including digestion, blood circulation, nutrient absorption, body temperature regulation, and detoxification.

The recommended amount of water to create homeostatis in the body is one half your body weight in ounces each day.  For example, a woman weighing 120 lbs should drink a minimum of 60 ounces of water per day.  Likewise, a man weighing 190 lbs should drink 95 ounces of water per day.

The health benefits of drinking the proper amount of water are unprecedented.

Address Nutritional Deficiencies

Nutrition is the foundation of good health, and eating a balanced whole-foods diet is essential for optimal health.  Unfortunately, it’s difficult to get adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals from your diet, even if you eat well.  Your age and relative health can impact your body’s ability to absorb and metabolize nutrients, potentially raising your risk for deficiencies.

While eating real food is always your best bet for nutritional needs, supplementation is sometimes required, especially if you’re already experiencing signs of deficiency.

Read on for a better understanding of the key vitamins and minerals you need to maintain good health…

Maintain Your Body's PH Balance

Virtually all degenerative diseases including cancer, heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, kidney and gall stones, and tooth decay are associated with excess acidity in the body. While the body has a homeostatic mechanism that maintains a constant pH 7.4 in the blood, this mechanism works by depositing and withdrawing acid and alkaline minerals from other locations including the bones, soft tissues, body fluids and saliva. Therefore, the pH of these other tissues can fluctuate greatly. The pH of saliva and urine offers a window through which you can see the overall pH balance in your body.

Whatever health situation you are faced with, you can monitor your progress toward a proper acid/alkaline balance by testing and maintaining an optimal pH balance

Exercise Regularly

We’ve heard about the benefits of exercise all of our lives, so it’s probably no secret that exercise is crucial for good health.  In fact, some experts claim that exercising regularly is the single most important thing you can do for your health.

When you exercise, you increase circulation and blood flow throughout your body.  This improved circulation boosts the immune system, providing a better chance to find and squelch illness before it has a chance to spread.

In the short term, exercise helps to reduce stress, control appetite, boost mood, and improve sleep.  In the long term, it reduces risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, demential, high blood pressure, depression, and many cancers.

Moderate activity is all you need – to keep your blood flowing and improve your circulation.
